The Growing Problem of Ineffective Time-Management
According to Bevines (2013), time scrutiny is getting worse, and it will continue to, unless the problem is addressed as an organization as a whole issue, rather than an individual problem. Having the right system, using a to-do-list, and organizing tasks are all great things to do; however, we live in a time where everything is moving fast, and that interruptions and unforeseen events are inevitable, making it difficult to keep up with everything (Bregman, 2012). According to Bregman (2012), “For that reason, choosing what we are going to ignore may well represent the most important, most strategic time-management decision of all” (para.1). We live in a time where everything is fast pace, including our lives and our work. We want things done faster and we want things faster, resulting in multi-tasking and ineffective time management.
What is Time-Management?
The definition of time management is, the ability to monitor the use of time, prioritizing task to increase personal efficiency and maximize productivity (Dictionary.com, n.d.). We cannot control time because it is not tangible (Bevines, 2013). However, with proper techniques, we can control how we use our time. Time management is important and at the same time, it is a problem because organizations, as well as individuals, are not spending enough time on strategic priorities. Bevines (2013) suggest establishing a budget for time, and avoid overloading individual employees with work, in order to manage executive time. I can use this same advice to create age appropriate chores for my children that will not overwhelm them. Managers and leaders should also root out time-wasters. Keeping that in mind, using the time management matrix, I can decide what is and not important, and what is not and urgent, to root out the so- called time wasters (Pychyl, 2008).
