Discrimination is defined as an unfair treatment of a person, racial group, minority, or an action based on prejudice. It means to distinguish, single out, or make a distinction between two people (Reuters).There are many different ways that one might be discriminated against in the workplace. Often you cannot pick up a newspaper and read through it without reading about at least one workplace discrimination case. Workplace discrimination can be anything from being treated unfavorably because of your skin color to a personality trait. Whether the discrimination comes from a supervisor, fellow co-worker or a customer it is considered illegal. The US. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is responsible for enforcing federal laws that make it illegal to discriminate against a job applicant or an employee in the workplace (Commission). The most common forms of workplace discrimination are gender, religion, racial and age discrimination. We will discuss each of these types of workplace discrimination in the following paragraphs.
The number one way a person is discriminated against in the United States is because of their gender. Gender discrimination is defined as anything that occurs when an individual is treated differently on account of their gender and may affect anything from hiring decisions to promotions (Reuters).
