What is a mental illness? A mental illness refers to a wide range of mental health conditions disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. What is delinquency? Delinquency is minor crime, especially that committed by young people. According to the National Alliance on Metal Illness (NAMI), a mental illness is medical condition that disrupts a person 's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning. Any type of mental illness can affect anyone, no matter the age, ethnicity, or lifestyle. How does having a mental illness correlate to one being involved with delinquency? There are many ways to look at the how it has an effect on young people. The leading cause of delinquency is issues from within the life of the delinquent. It could be family issues, social status, or economic status.
Depression is often related to being the end result of going through or being in the situation. If there are family issues going on in the adolescents’ life, where if there is not enough or no attention is being shown, the child is going to go and find attention wherever it can be seen and accepted no matter where or who it comes from. Also, if the child wishes to be a priority, and the parents’ are not fulfilling that for them, the child may commit a delinquent act to become a priority.
