Amanda Lenhart, who is the senior research specialist at the Pew Internet & American Life Project, reports that “Teens have been a big contributor to this growth, with 81 percent of teens — 17 million people — using the Internet to play games online. That is a 52 percent jump since 2000— online games have become a widespread form of social networking.” (Glazer). From the very earliest days of networked and time-shared computers, online games have been part of the culture. Computers can create virtual spaces for a wide variety of game types. Video games simulate conventional game objects such as cards or dice while others can simulate environs either grounded in reality or fantastical in design, each with its own set of rules or goals. Modern online games are played using an Internet connection; some have dedicated client programs while others require only a web browser. Many online games have associated online communities, making online games a form of social activity beyond single player games. As technology becomes more and more developed, there is an increasing in video games. Video game is a useful distraction if people play in moderation. However, besides some benefits, video games also have its disadvantages. The spread of video games causes a lot of serious problems for people, especially for children.
