Vegetarianism, is it just a fad, or will it continue to cultivate and grow more mainstream than it is today? All signs are indicating that it will, indeed, continue to grow. 7.3 million people in the United States are vegetarian and 3.2 of the total population in the world do not eat meat (Vegetarianism 8). If one loves life, why not try vegetarianism? Having a vegetarian diet not only saves animals, but also improves health and uses less of the planet’s diminishing resources.
In 2010, each person in the US ate an average of 57.5 pounds of beef, 46.5 pounds of pork, and 82 pounds of chicken. Many strong followers of this diet claim it is unnecessary to take an animal’s life when vegetarian options are available (Vegetarianism 3). On

The meat that Americans eat today not only comes from a creature that almost does not even relate to the typical farm animal most think of, it does not even ensure a healthy and sufficient contribution to one’s diet.
The American Heart Association and the World Health Organization both have claimed that, “A vegetarian diet can meet human nutritional needs as well as provide health benefits such as the prevention of certain diseases” (Vegetarianism 5). Physicians that agree with not eating meat have all said that eating meat can increase the chances of developing more health problems than those of non-meat eaters. Eating meat can increase the chances of developing high blood pressure as well as heart and kidney disease and certain types of cancer. People who have high levels of meat consumption have excess calcium, oxalate, and uric acid in their bodies, which can cause kidney and gallstones (Maurer 60). The risk of heart disease goes down if the consumption of meat in one’s diet is eliminated. 24% of Americans who have been diagnosed with this disease have lived longer, stronger, and healthier lives than those who had the disease and continued to eat meat (Vegetarianism 4). The overall weight of those who do not eat meat is much lower than those who do and they are expected to live three to seven years longer than those who consume it.
