In today’s modern concrete we often utilize supplementary cementitious materials (SCM), which are materials when combined with Portland cement intensify the properties of the hardened concrete by hydraulic or pozzolanic activity or both. Two major materials that intensify the properties when combined with Portland cement are fly ash and slag cement, which are co-products of other processes or natural materials. Slag, which is a stony waste matter, is separated from metals during the smelting or refining of ore. On the other hand fly ash is comprised of ash produced in small dark flecks, typically from a furnace, and carried into the air. Pozzolan, a siliceous and aluminous material that alone holds a really minor cementitious value to none at all (Fig. 1). However if introduced to water, it creates a chemical reaction with calcium hydroxide at a particular temperature that now gives it the compounds possessing cementitious properties. This now does not only allow the use of hazards and harmful materials to strengthen, bond, and add durability to concrete, it also give us a great opportunity from allowing these materials from ending up in wasteland or the atmosphere. Such materials are constantly being used in the daily basis to optimize the strength of the concrete and lower the use of other aggregate materials like sand and gravel.
