On December 17th, 1903, the Wright Brothers took flight in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. The iconic event was the first fully documented successful powered flight by a heavier-than-air aircraft. The brothers catapulted to the front of aviation innovation; the names Orville and Wilbur Wright became known world-wide, and the brothers were celebrated as heroes in the United States. All of this praise couldn’t last forever, though, and soon Orville and Wilbur encountered issues with the patenting and proof of legitimacy of their flying method. These issues escalated into a full blown patent war between the brothers and other inventors in the field. The brothers from Indiana went on to delay American aeroplane progress for years. After their historic first flight, The Wright Brothers took to the post office to issue a patent for their method of controlling an aircraft. They had found a way to control all three axes of flight (control, pitch, and yaw) simultaneously using mechanisms on the airplane. Wing warping was a way to control the lateral control, or roll, of an airplane by using cables and pulleys to pull the wings in opposite directions. To control the rotation on its vertical axis, or yaw, the Wright Brothers used a rudder at the back of the plane, controlled by petals. A forward elevator at the front of the craft controlled pitch (the kind of “up and down” of flight). These mechanisms all working together made up the method for control that Orville and Wilbur would…
