The Uninvited is a 2009 American Psychological horror film that features a broken family who has gone through a recent loss; it specifically follows the youngest daughter Anna. The film begins with Anna, a young teen being released from a psychiatric hospital after residing there for ten months. She was initially admitted due to her suicide attempt after her terminally ill mother died in a mysterious boathouse fire. Although she admits to having no memory of the event, Anna frequently has nightmares related to it. Images such as a beach party that she had attended with her sister and had been drinking at, and hearing her mother calling for her in the boathouse where she was residing. Upon returning home from the hospital Anna is reunited with her older sister, Alex and promptly introduced to her father, Steve’s new girlfriend, Rachel the nurse who had been caring for the girl’s mother. Through a snarky comment from Alex, it is revealed that Steve was sleeping with Rachel while their mother was still alive, needless to say, Anna and Alex are less than thrilled that their father is with her. Throughout the film Anna confides in Alex that she has been experiencing scenes like her nightmares of the boathouse fire while she is still awake. The girl’s reason that these hallucinations are warning signs from their dead mother that Rachel murdered her.
