“Faith is seeing light with your heart when all your eyes see is darkness.” This quote perfectly describes Patria who is one of the sisters in the book, In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. This novel takes place in the 1900’s in the Dominican Republic while it was under the rule of Trujillo. Trujillo ran a dictatorship in the Dominican Republic for over 30 years with strict rules and harsh punishments. The story follows the real lives of the Mirabal sisters and each chapter is through one of their perspectives. Their family is extremely close, but all the sisters have very different personalities. Throughout their life they are heavily exposed to the corruption and injustice of the Trujillo regime and eventually all the sisters join the revolution against Trujillo. When all the sisters’ husbands are arrested and imprisoned because of their actions against the regime, they go and visit their husbands and continue to voice their opinions against Trujillo. On their way back to town all the sisters except Dede are killed by Trujillo’s workers. The sisters become legendary figures for the people of the Dominican Republic. All the sisters change throughout the book, but Patria the eldest of the sisters, has a very prominent change of character. Patria evolves as a character from the beginning to the end of the book by keeping her religious faith and motherly kindness, but at the same time finding strength and courage within herself by going through many events because…
