The Media The media is a means of communicating with a large number of people in an efficient way. The media consists of “print media” which is anything physical, such as books, newspapers, magazines or comics; “broadcast media”, anything that is transmitted electronically, such as television networks, radio, websites on the internet, music and film. Another type of medium is “outdoor media” which comprises of billboards, signs, advertisements on planes, buses, trains, and cars. Mass media have the ability to influence the way people think. The shooting was staged by the American government using actors in an attempt to pass gun control laws (5). Another modern day example of government propaganda in the media is the fact that marijuana is illegal due to it being “harmful” and that it has “no recognized medical value.” However, the government owns a patent on “Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants” (Patent 6630507). So, why is the government moving so slow towards the legalization of medical and recreational use of marijuana? The government makes money from throwing people in jail (6). Another important question would be “why does the media talk down on a harmless and incredibly useful Rahim 3 plant like hemp?” Hemp can be used to make clothes, food and beverages, plastics, fuel, building supplies and a multitude of other things (8). Hemp is illegal for one reason; it has the ability to put many big name companies out of business (7). In conclusion, the media has the ability to influence the masses regardless of whether their information may be right or wrong. The government may not always have our best interest in mind, so it is up to the people to do their own research, watch alternative news, not take everything with a grain of salt, and most importantly, think for yourself because if you're not thinking for yourself then
