One very popular method for uncovering basic emotions is through facial expressions. From the moment we are born we demonstrate emotion through facial expressions. In babies, it is very important that they are able to demonstrate their feelings through facial expressions. There are many different kinds of emotions that every human being experiences during certain situations. Some emotions would be anger, sadness, fear, happiness, love, surprise, anxiety, amongst many others. Facial expressions make it very simple to be able to notice what kind of emotion the individual is going through.

A person can lie and say things are ok or fake a smile, but someone who can read facial expressions will notice when it is a lie. Certain muscles of the face will move as the emotion is taking place. When someone is truly happy the widening of the mouth will create a change in the eyes as well. It is very easy to tell how someone truly feels when researching through facial expressions. We understand that everyone goes through a set of emotions depending on the situation. Someone can become afraid if they are alone in the woods and come face to face with a wolf, or happy if they go outside and find out their parents have bought them a brand new car. Facial expressions are a great way to be able to read and research those emotions without the person actually having to verbally announce them. The James-Lange theory is one of the best-known examples of a physiological theory of emotion. The James-Lange theory of emotion suggests that emotions occur as a result of physiological reactions to events (What are the 3 Major Theories of Emotion). According to this theory, you see an external stimulus that leads to a physiological reaction, and your emotional reaction is dependent upon how you interpret those physical reactions (What are the 3 Major Theories of Emotion).
