Abstract: This paper is a report on the development of algebra throughout time. It’s slow, but nevertheless, unyielding progression brings us to the algebra we know today. However, it was not always based on the abstract, rather, it was born out of necessity. The need to calculate unknown quantities gave rise to algebraic methods and techniques practiced and taught even today. And, even though nowadays, algebra is a rather abstract mathematics, this was not always the case. It was through centuries of work from remarkable individuals with an undying passion and curiosity that algebra slowly but surely evolved.

Introduction

In modern day mathematics, the term algebra denotes the manipulation of abstract symbols, solving equations for unknowns, simplifying expressions, or simply rearranging numbers and variables to satisfy certain conditions. However, this was not always the case, as a matter of fact, algebra in the beginning arose from the simple need to solve basic mathematic problems involving an unknown. Nevertheless, it did not begin with any type of special notation nor were abstract symbols used to denote unknowns. Much of algebra was practiced thorough verbal statements and solution. At first, this was sufficient, but as time progressed, the need for more concrete and precise methods arose and along with it the abstract algebra we know of today. The development and progression of algebra was slow, but at the same time, it was solid and of such great importance,…
