The terms cardiovascular disease and cardiac disease are terms that are often used interchangeably, however, they are not the same thing. Cardiac disease is an umbrella term that incorporates many different cardiac health problems. Cardiovascular disease is a condition that incorporates the vasculature of the heart.
In 2008, an “estimated 17.3 million people die from CVDs, representing 30% of all global deaths” (Cardiovascular, 2014). CVDs or cardiovascular disease is the main leading cause of death on a global level. Cardiac disease incorporates conditions such as heart attack, ischemic stroke, heart failure, arrhythmia, heart valve problems, congenital heart disease, pericardial disease and aorta disease or Marfan Syndrome, just to name a few. Each of these conditions each affect a different area of the heart and each have separate causes, diagnoses, and treatments. However, some of these conditions are sometimes treated with surgery which often leads up to the patient needing to undergo cardiac rehabilitation.
This paper is going to give a brief overview of the anatomy of the heart as background reference, then examine individual cardiac conditions that can affect an individual. Cardiac rehabilitative programs are discussed at the end of the paper and identifies academic literature on different methods of cardiac rehabilitative measures.
