Teen Dating Violence Essay
Teen Dating Violence (TDV) is described as the physical, emotional, or sexual abuse that occurs within a relationship while dating. TDV can occur in person, or electronically by a current or former partner (CDC, 2014). Many adolescents and adults are unaware of the prevalence of TDV but a recent national study revealed that nearly 10% of adolescents have reported being hit, slapped, or intentionally physically hurt by someone they had claimed to be dating (CDC, 2014). About 20% of adult women who reported experiencing some form of intimate partner violence (IPV) also reported experiencing TDV between the ages of 11-17 (CDC, 2014). While the prevalence of IPV against women is considerable nationwide, research studies have revealed that the prevalence of IPV in Louisiana even worse. In 2005, Louisiana had the second highest rate of domestic violent female homicides in the nation. Louisiana’s prevalence of domestic violence homicide was 2.53 per 100,000. The national average is at 1.30 per 100,00. Louisiana’s average is nearly double the national average. Moreover, 70% of the female victims were Black (NCADV,n.d). These statistics place an urgency on an intervention program that focuses on minority teens and the prevention of TDV, and ultimately IPV.
