Is the internet today as we know the playground that has no rules? Are copyright infringers’ taking advantage of the internet and allowed to violate copyright laws without any repercussions? Many copyright owners that feel their works of authorship are being broadcasted through the world of the internet without their permissions. This copyright material is being displayed not only on US websites but foreign websites. How can these copyright infringers’ be held accountable? Stop Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) has a few suggestions.
Stop Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) are bills that were brought to congress to stop online piracy. The companies that were the biggest advocates for the passing of these bills were movie and the recording industry. Walt Disney Company was one of the biggest lobbyist for these bills. Disney’s copyrighted material was being broadcasted through the internet and this was being doing without their permission. The copyright material was not only being transmitted through the United States but it was being transmitted through foreign sites as well. The purpose and goal of the Stop Piracy Act (SOPA) and Protect IP Act (PIPA) were to address issues that were not covered in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) which went into effect in 2000.
