Stephen Hawking "Cosmologist Stephen Hawking is regarded as one of the most brilliant theoretical physicists since Albert Einstein." (Stephen Hawking Biography). However, he is destined for death... Stephen Hawking is a cosmologist, physicist, and profound author who was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, better known as Lou Gehrig 's disease or ALS. Even though he was diagnosed with a terminal disease, this did not stop Hawking from becoming one of the most recognizable icons in today’s times. If Hawking would have let this disease take him in the two and a half years that the doctors gave him to live, he wouldn 't have advanced the world of science with his ground-breaking work in cosmology and physics. As he suffered from the disease, Hawking still managed to write a good number of books, which helped the public come to understand all of his discoveries. Also, even while dealing with the disease, Hawking managed to be awarded with twelve honorary degrees, a CBE, a Companion of Honour, fellow of the Royal Society, and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, many other awards, medals, and prizes. All in all, Hawking never let the disease get the best of him. On the eve of the 300th anniversary of Galileo’s death, Stephen Hawking was birthed by Isobel Hawking.
