HUL started Project Shakti in 2001 with the aim of increasing the company’s rural distribution reach simultaneously providing rural women with income-generating opportunities. It is a rural distribution programme of HUL focusing on small villages with less than 5000 population. The project Shakti is intended to promote significant outreach of HUL products in rural areas and provide unique livelihood opportunities for the poor women. The project concept stimulates formation of micro enterprises and women entrepreneurs undertaking direct marketing activities by selling consumer products and leading brands through the initiative of Project Shakti. The name “Shakti” means ‘energy’ in Vedic and is a manifestation of the creative principle. Under the initiative, HUL provides necessary training to make normal women to become women entrepreneur. Shaktiamma thus embodies the concept of empowerment. The Model Was Piloted in Nalgonda District of Andhra Pradesh in 50 Villages in the Year 2000. The Government of Andhra Pradesh Took the Pioneering Step of Supporting the Initiative by Enabling Linkages with the Network of Dwacra Groups of Rural Women Set Up for Their Development and Self-Employment( SHGs were formed).
