“It’s me. You mind if I come over? I have root beer popsicles.”
“Sure.” Lisa held the phone away from her ear and peered at the display. “That would be great.”
“Did I wake you up?”
“I needed to get up anyhow.” That was a lie. She didn’t have to be at work until noon tomorrow. Another half day on Friday, and then she’d be on vacation for the next six weeks. It would be a nice paid vacation, if only she wanted a vacation.
“Okay. I’ll be there in ten minutes.”
“Let yourself in. I need a shower.”
Claire was waiting when Lisa emerged from the bathroom, still rubbing her wet hair with a towel. Her teal long-sleeve T-shirt and brown yoga pants looked like pajamas next to Claire’s bulky cable knit sweater, skinny jeans and brown boots.
“Hi.”
Clair tapped the power button on her phone and tossed it into the purse at her feet. “Guess what!”
“You’re pregnant.”
Claire’s mouth dropped open, and Lisa laughed. “No baby?”
“Not yet. And hopefully not this year.”
“I thought you said you were ready to start a family!”
“Well, yes, but not for a few more months. You won’t believe what happened after our talk this morning.”
“Tell me.” Lisa sat on the glider stool. She hadn’t seen Claire this excited in years.
“I drove over to the church to bring Connor some lunch, and he was on the phone with a guy from the Baptist church down on Franklin Avenue. They’re looking for a female nurse for a medical mission to Guatemala!” She finished on a bounce and a squeal.
“But why did they call our church?”…
