From reading the title you are now probably wondering what Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is? Well to answer that, Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, commonly abbreviated to PTSD is “a serious condition that can develop after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event in which serious physical harm occurred or was threatened” as found in the dictionary. In other words a traumatic event makes a mental scar that may never go away. Don’t worry thought in the following paragraphs we will look at how the disorder develops, how common it tends to be, signs along with how it is diagnosed, how it is treated and examples of PTSD in literate.
To start, what are the causes of this disorder and how common is it? Well as stated in the first paragraph, it develops after a person has experienced or witnessed a traumatic or terrifying event. For some people it is caused by the return from war. For others, it may be from mental or physical abuse. What, causes the disorder is different in every person, but similar in that it was traumatic or terrifying. However, PTSD is not as common as some may think, it occurs in 3.6% of adult Americans, which is about 5.2 million people. It’s estimated thought that 7.8 million Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives. This disorder may develop at all ages, which includes childhood. It has also been noticed that PTSD is more likely to develop in women than men.
