Being obese has always been a concern throughout the world, but nowadays, it has become a new trend. People are eating more than ever before. At the same time, people are becoming more inactive. The trend has now become so bad, that adults are no longer the only ones experiencing obesity: children are too. The United States is the leading country in obesity. The United States has become so bad they are nearly ten years ahead of everyone else in amount of obese people living in the country (Haslam). Although the United States is leader in this category, everyone needs to take action to stop this new trend. Obesity is not a new issue, but with a change in society, it is growing at a dangerous rate with concerns not only with adults but also children. Obesity is a growing problem around the world, and there are many mainstream ways people become obese. Obesity as defined in David Haslam’s article on obesity is “any excess body fat accumulation with multiple organ-specific pathological consequences” (Haslam). The definition is saying that a person takes in more calories than they burn off, leading to a gain in weight which will cause organ problems throughout their bodies. Most causes of obesity can be solved through the victim. One cause of obesity is the social networks a person is surrounded by.
