Real World Negotiation - A Family Vacation All Inclusive, 7 night vacation in the Mayan Riviera; heaven… with family! A total of 15 people decided to plan a vacation. Throw a few people that are extremely stubborn with a few that are picky and some that are price sensitive and you have a messy multiparty negotiation. Luckily we all agreed on the location quickly as most of the group has not travelled there before. Out of the 15 people, 7 were the decision makers / negotiators – those are the ones that had to agree on date, price and hotel. In addition, one couple was unable to join us until a few days later so some people wanted a date that is closest to them and others were deciding strictly on price. and that it is well worth it to pay for these things. This left us all in a bad position. Those that are picky stated that is it not the best deal if we go to a cheaper hotel because they are “missing” some things such as service, number of restaurants, etc. In the meantime, those that prefer a cheaper hotel stated that it is not the best deal if they go to a more expensive one as it may seem that they are being ripped off and that 5 restaurants instead of 9 in the more expensive resort is not a big deal overall. Arguments broke out, alliances were formed and people became stubborn. We finally agreed on a specific hotel to go to – now came the date. We narrowed the dates down to 3 options: Saturday Aug 18, Sunday Aug 19 and Monday Aug 20. The majority of the group was to leave on either the Saturday or the Sunday and one couple was to meet us on the Monday. Again, we were split. Saturday’s price was $100 cheaper than Sunday but we would arrive 2 days prior to the other couple arriving on Monday. Those closer to the couple preferred to travel on Sunday. If we were to split up, we would not get the group discount which applies to a group of 10 travelling at the same time. Someone had to make a sacrifice! After many arguments with each side justifying their interests, we were told by a travel agent that one of the flights leaving on Sunday was sold out and we needed to book fast!
