Chapter 7: Mass customization of products has become a common approach in manufacturing organizations. Explain the ways in which mass customization can be applied to service firms as well.

Mass customization can be applied to service firms in many ways. Manufacturing firms are placing a greater emphasis on customer service to differentiate themselves and be more competitive (Daft, 2013, pg. 278). They also have human resource departments and marketing departments which are connected to the service technologies. The need for service firms to deal with mass customization is driven by the customer expectations. It is also driven by any organization that is trying to develop a competitive advantage over any competitive companies. It is hard to find any organizations that characteristics are 100% service or 100% manufacturing (Daft, 2013, pg. 278). With the development in new technologies and different ways of thinking about strategies that will put the customers at a high priority, mass customization in service firms put the focus on answering customers’ needs and wants. The majority of organizations now a day include a combination of services and manufacturing.
