Management: The final frontier. These are the stories of the company ACCO. Its lifelong mission (77 years and going): to explore new cities and states, to seek out new ways of cooling and heating the world, and to boldly become a billion dollar company before the year 2020.
To achieve these goals, ACCO will be required to have not only the best management personal in place, but the men and woman in these roles must be great leaders’ not just managers. It has been said that “The principal object of management should be to secure the maximum prosperity for the employer, coupled with the maximum prosperity for each employee,” (Taylor, 1911, p. 3). He has been with the company for almost 15 years and has become a great source of information and understanding with regards to the billing and collections side of the business. He has worked his way up the ranks in both these department and really understands how much of a key role they play to the success of ACCO as a company. On the other hand, since these are the only two areas in which he has had the bulk of his experience, he is having a hard time moving away from them (since they are all he knows) which is causing a large portion of the problems he is having with being a leader.
Conceptual skill: a facility for abstract or strategic thinking
One of my old bosses used to say, “Think outside the box” he was always looking for a better, faster or cheaper way of doing something. I believe that this is extremely important with regards to the management at ACCO in the coming years because we as a company will not achieve our Billion Dollar goal if we continue to operate at the status quo. Since Bill has been with the company for a long time (most of his career) he is of the opinion “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” This mindset is narrow minded and will not allow ACCO to reach its goals. Companies have to adapt and change in order to succeed in this economy.
