Management planning is the most important function of management because it is the foundation for the organization. The planning function of management is the management function of systematically making decisions about the goals and activities than an individual, a group, a work unit, or the overall organization will pursue. Planning is specifying the goals to be achieved and deciding in advance the appropriate actions needed to achieve those goals. Boeing is the top U.S exporter and supports customers in more than 90 countries. Some of the products Boeing is responsible for include military aircrafts, satellites, weapons, electronic and defense systems, launch systems, advanced information and communication systems as well as performance based logistics and training, (Boeing, 2010). Boeing aircrafts are regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration which regulates and oversees all aspects of civil aviation in the United States. Because of all the rules and regulations that a multinational corporation such as Boeing must follow, they must conduct broad planning to run a proper business. Even when there is strategic and well thought out planning, there are always legal, ethical and corporate issues that impact or influence the planning process (Beck, 2011). Business managers and owners must be prepared to have to deal with legal issues that may occur because these legal issues can put the company in an awkward position. In 2000, Boeing was sued over a complicated legal issue involving gender pay differential (Associated Content, 2008). The evidence regarding this case was very strong; however, Boeing was protected from liability by attorney client privilege. Also, with most of the evidence thrown out, Boeing was able to settle out of court and save themselves from public humiliation.
