After researching, I found two studies that are similar to my experiment. One study by Sean Boyd (2007) tested to see which brand of microwave popcorn yielded the least amount of un-popped kernels. Mr. Boyd tested five brands of butter flavored microwave popcorn: Aldi, Act II, Orville Redenbacher, Jolley Time and Pop-Secret. His experiment proved his hypothesis partially wrong. Mr. Boyd hypothesized that Orville Redenbacher would be the best and Aldi's would be the worst. His experiment proved that Act II produced the least amount of un-popped kernels while Aldi's did have the most un-popped kernels on average. On the other end of the spectrum, Tammie Mason (2011) experimented to see which brand of microwave popcorn yielded the …show more content…
Threat Reduction to Internal Validity: Utilizing the same microwave oven and following the manufacturer's suggested cooking time for each independent brand will reduce the threat reduction to internal validity. Purchasing all the brand of popcorn at the same market and storing in the same location of my pantry will ensure all brands are at the same room temperature and same humidity level. Keeping each package of popcorn sealed in its outer plastic packaging until it is ready to be cooked will ensure the freshness. By microwaving each brand according to the manufacturer's specific direction ensures their brand will achieve its maximum yield. Popping three bags of each brand will help to ensure consistency. Hypothesis: After reviewing the data from Mr. Boyd and Ms. Mason's experiments, Orville Redenbacher looks somewhat promising. Orville Redenbacher has been a major player in the popcorn business since 1969. It's my opinion that you can't be that successful if your brand does not live up to its reputation. Of course Jolley Time, founded in 1914, is the oldest popcorn company but is better known for its traditional popping corn, not microwave popcorn. Even though their slogan is "Guaranteed to Pop", I have to go with Orville Redenbacher. Act II did not fare well in either of Mr. Boyd's or Ms. Mason's findings and Pop Weaver was at the back of the pack as well. Maybe its Orville's honest looking face. I predict Orville Redenbacher's will
