I will be discussing “In Country” by Bobbie Ann Mason. In part one of the book Sam was driving past a family cemetery when she “shot up onto the exit ramp a little too fast, and the tires squeal” (3). An everyday object helps us remember specific details from the past or someone we are thinking about. People carry items that have emotional value to them. Some don’t but there is always an object that they may constantly see every day that does. An example would be a couple that always goes to McDonalds for breakfast but one of them dies and now the one that is alive is constantly reminded of the loved one when passing by McDonalds. Sam was distracted while gazing at the cemetery which causes her to wonder of the road. In Sam case, it is true that is not an everyday object that she may see but it still represents something. She never got the chance to meet her dad, due to the fact he left for the Vietnam War when she was born and never return from the war. The cemetery triggers a feeling that reminded her that her dad was gone and she never got to meet him. As the story goes on, Sam becomes curious about how her dad was and what he went through in the war. Sam curiosity develops more and she wants to experience the same feeling her dad went through in the war. She wants to experience the past and as long as she does it will prevent her from moving forward with her life.
