Hardness Tests and Charpy Impact Test
Objectives:
1) To compare the hardness between mild steel, carbon steel through Vickers Hardness Test. 2) To compare the hardness between High Quality Carbon Steel and ASSAB steel through Rockwell Hardness Test. 3) To compare the hardness between carbon steel and mild steel through Brinell Hardness Test. 4) To study the differences between mild steel and carbon steel upon Charpy Impact Test.
Introduction:
Hardness is a measure of the resistance of a metal to permanent (plastic) deformation. The hardness of a metal is measured by forcing an indenter into its surface. The indenter material, which is usually a ball, pyramid, or cone, is made of a material much harder than the material

6) Change the indenter with the lens. 7) The width of the corner is measured and recorded. 8) Step 1 to 7 is repeated for five times by using the same sample but at different part of the sample. 9) Step 1 to 8 is then repeated by using different sample, which is carbon steel. Rockwell Hardness Test 1) The specimen ASSAB steel is correctly placed on the anvil of the Rockwell Hardness instrument. 2) The base of the instrument is slowly rotated the LED will started to move until it reaches ‘SET’. 3) The load is then applied on the sample for a specific dwell time of 15 seconds. 4) The readings taken are recorded from the indenter machine. 5) Step 1 to 4 is repeated for five times by using the same sample but at different part of the sample. 6) Step 1 to 5 is then repeated by using different sample of carbon steel.

Brinell Hardness Test 7) The mild steel is placed correctly on the anvil of the instrument. 8) The base of the instrument is slowly rotated until the specimen touches the indenter. 9) The right holder of the machine is adjusted until it reaches the 1000kgf load. 10) The indenter is pressed on the sample by an accurately controlled force for about 15 seconds of dwell time. 11) The indenter is removed slowly after 15 seconds, leaving a round
