Fossil fuels are natural fuels that are formed when remains of dead organisms pass through episodes of natural processes such as decomposition and disintegration; that exceeded millions of years. Fossil fuels include coal, oil and natural gas; they are categorized as fuels due to their ability to release energy when they undergo combustion. Currently, they are the main source of Energy production consumed by humanity. The scope of this essay will discuss the different advantages and disadvantages of using fossil fuels as sources of energy and alternative energy sources and methods discovered by environmentalists that are more environmentally friendly.

Fossil fuels are non-renewable meaning that they eventually deplete. Fossil fuels in particular need millions of years to get formed meaning that we cannot produce them when they are diminished. But we cannot neglect their numerous advantages, which include their high availability and accessibility. Coal for example, is currently the most prominent source of electricity and is considered, along with oil, as one of the most abundant energy sources. As for oil, it is also easily transported and relatively cheap compared to other energy sources. Also, both coal and oil have the sufficiency to produce great amounts of energy and have a high calorific value making them very effective. Furthermore, coal and oil can also be both imported and exported by different countries enhancing trade and economic wellbeing.
