What is cosmetic surgery? Cosmetic surgery and procedures change, restore, or enhance your appearance. The scope of cosmetic surgery procedures includes: Breast enhancement: augmentation, lift, reduction, Facial Contouring: rhinoplasty, chin, or cheek enhancement, Facial Rejuvenation: facelift, eyelid lift, neck lift, brow lift, Body Contouring: tummy tuck, liposuction, gynecomastia treatment, Skin Rejuvenation: laser resurfacing, Botox®, filler treatments. Growing popular among teenagers, cosmetic surgery such as breast implants and liposuction are now bestowed by parents as graduation or birthday gifts. According to the Washington Post, in the past few months several doctors ' groups have cautioned teenagers and their parents against resorting to major surgery as a quick fix for popularity or self-esteem (Olding and Zuckerman). In the United States there is no minimal age for cosmetic surgery, but parental consent is required for patients who are younger than 19 (Martinson). From 2002 to 2003, according to the American Society of for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the number of girls 18 and younger who got breast implants nearly tripled, from 3,872 to 11,326 (Olding and Zuckerman). According to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPS), more than 236,000 cosmetic procedures were performed on patients ages 19 and younger in 2012 (Zuckerman).
