The Warehouse Group Ltd is a typical half-hearted company that does not do what it preaches in the area of Corporate Social Responsibility. From the Warehouse Annual Report and Social and Environment Report 2009, I found that the company is not only focusing on its financial performance, but also on social and environmental external effects. A critical analysis of this reporting practice suggests that the Warehouse is not truly responsible socially and environmentally but more a public relation exercise of the company.

The Warehouse was established in 1982 to operate some discount stores. The company has over 7,600 employees in the all network stores and has 253 stores through New Zealand from Kataia in the North Island to Invercargill

There is no real action shown on the most critical environmental aspects of the Warehouse business. By selling low quality products that have short useful life, the Warehouse has contributed to a massive industrial garbage problem in New Zealand from these broken or thrown-away Warehouse products.

In terms of the Warehouse’s contribution to the community and society, they have different programs to support the community such as “Clean – up New Zealand”, project Kiwi, the donations from coin boxes, plastic bags sales, free –planting scheme, barbecues etc. They sponsored some big community organizations, such as De Paul House and Mana Enterprise (Society and Environment Report 2009). The majority of donations that the company makes do not come from the company’s profit, but it comes from the promotions what attract their customers. Again, it shows as long as it does not hurt the profit, the Warehouse will be happy to contribute to the community and the society.

The fourth activity is dealing with their employees. The Warehouse states and shows in their reports that their employees are important part of their business. The quote states in the Social and Environmental Report 2009: “We enjoy success through working together as a team”. The company also promotes programs such as “Teamsafe” and “Movesafe”.
