Children And Students With Disabilities Essay
Following the Regular Education Initiative (REI), proposed in 1989, many controversial topics arose regarding the inclusion of students with disabilities into general education classrooms. However, under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), the least restrictive environment for children for disabilities should be in an educational setting “with other children who are not disabled, and special classes…occurs only when the nature or severity of the disability of a child is such that education in regular classes with the use of supplementary aids and services cannot be achieved satisfactorily” (US Department of Education, n.d). It is important to include English Learners (EL) students and students with disabilities in general education classrooms to help improve communication, socialization, problem-solving/team work skills. An adaptive curriculum that reflects the needs of all children would be formed and modified as need to ensure all the children’s needs are being addressed. In order to successfully include all students in a general education classroom, the following actions should occur: monitoring of student’s progress in the general education classroom, providing adequate resources, continuum of services, program evaluation, continuous professional development, school support, and identifying specific roles/responsibilities (ERIC).
