Lab 2
Biological Molecules and pH

Introduction: Connecting Your Learning
Biological organisms, like all things, are made up of elements. These elements combine to form organic molecules that create the basis for life. The main elements found in biological organisms include carbon (C), hydrogen (H), phosphorus (P), nitrogen (N), and oxygen (O). This lab describes how these elements form some of the most important molecules in life: carbohydrates, proteins, and fats.

E. Repeat steps C and D above for each of the remaining unknown samples, as well as the chicken soup, taking care to wash the spoon off in tap water and dry it between mixing each sample.
2. Perform the Benedict's test on corn syrup (contains glucose), sugar (contains sucrose), and each of the four unknown samples. Record the results.
A. Begin heating tap water to a rolling boil in a small saucepan. This will be needed as a water bath for the test tubes. Be sure to add enough water to the pan to cover the liquid in the test tube.
B. Take 1 tablespoon of distilled water and place it into a plastic cup. Add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the water and stir until dissolved. Add a second tablespoon of sugar to the water and stir until dissolved. At this time, the sugar may not dissolve so the solution will need to be heated. Place the sugar and water solution into the 50 mL beaker and, using an oven mitt or glove, hold the beaker in the pot of boiling water and stir the solution with the glass rod until the sugar dissolves.
Add the remaining 2 tablespoons of sugar to the beaker and heat, stirring until all or most of the sugar dissolves. Remove the beaker and allow it to cool.
C. Place a piece of tape on each of the six test tubes. Label the first test tube "corn syrup," the second test tube "sugar," and then number the
