Companies and other various businesses have utilized over the years, some of the same tried-and-true methods of attracting and obtaining information from prospecting applicants for employment. Employers post the ads and prospects answer them by filling out an application. This is usually followed by a one-on-one interview either in person or by phone and the applicant is asked to send in a written resume. But in an ever increasing social and technological world, the methods of employers in finding the right candidates for the job have had to quickly evolve. In order to keep up with all the changes in communication and the access of information, companies have converted to using social media to find background information on prospecting candidates. However, the use of social networking websites for pre-employment screenings by companies is unethical and cautionary. In the past, companies have acquired background information of applicants by the usual background checks such as drug and criminal past, resume accuracy, education and job history and personal as well as professional references. In recent years there has been a significant shift in the employment process. Recruiters has begun to use social media as a tool in searching the backgrounds of candidates in an attempt to gage a better understanding of who is applying to work for their company.
