Throughout this essay the following statement ‘the advantages of tourism outweigh the disadvantages’ will be critically evaluated. It is known that tourism’s a world-wide industry which generates a huge amount of money, however many people don’t see the implications that tourism can have on communities. The course of this essay will explore the statement from a range of different perspectives and overall demonstrate that the statement is false.
Although this essay is to highlight the disadvantages of tourism, it’s very clear that there are many advantages to tourism too. Tourism’s commonly an extremely welcomed business due to the fact it brings employment opportunities, a much needed and wanted increase of foreign exchange, and a more contemporary lifestyle (Wall and Mathieson, 2006). One of the highly recognised advantages tourism delivers is the economic benefits. As international arrivals continue to grow, so do the international receipts. According to the World Tourism Organisation (2013) there was a 4% increase from 2011-2012 of international tourism revenue with an estimated US $1,075billion earnings worldwide in 2012. Profit’s generated through international visitors spending money in a destination and creating foreign exchange, for example tourism organisations; such as hotels, restaurants, attractions and souvenir shops, gain profit when tourists spend their money in return for products or services (Ryan, 2003).
