Hurt By the Help According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, malpractice is “a dereliction of professional duty or a failure to exercise an ordinary degree of professional skill or learning by one (as a physician) rendering professional services which results in injury, loss, or damages. In other words, malpractice occurs a medical professional fails to provide proper medical attention that results in pain and suffering from the patient. Medical malpractice can result in death and trauma for a patient. Malpractice is an important topic in today’s society because without it there would be no ethical standard. Medical malpractice serves as a safeguard for patients, being as how a medical professional can be sued and a patient can be compensated for a mistake that was made. Medical malpractice is a very broad topic; however, it has two main branches: negligence and malpractice. Types of negligence include bacterial infections, elder abuse, nursing negligence, failure to diagnose, and in some cases, wrongful death. The types of malpractice are surgical errors, birth injury, misdiagnosis and diagnosis errors, defective products, anesthesia errors, and prescription drug errors. These types of professional negligence result in patient pain and suffering and even death. Whether it is a minor injury or a major one, medical malpractice is not something that should ever be taken lightly by a healthcare facility. Malpractice…
